Donate your car by Dec 31 for a 2024 Milwaukee tax break

In the Milwaukee Metro, the IRS counts your car donation on the date it’s physically picked up. Schedule now so Heritage for the Blind can tow it free before December 31 and lock in this year’s deduction.

In Milwaukee, the IRS deadline for your car donation is the pickup date, not the day you call. To claim a deduction for this tax year, your vehicle must be physically picked up on or before December 31. That’s why Cream City Keys urges Milwaukee donors to schedule their free pickup 3–5 business days before year-end. Heritage for the Blind handles everything: fast scheduling, free towing, and your written acknowledgment for tax purposes once the vehicle sells.

Cream City Keys is proud to serve the entire Milwaukee Metro, from the East Side, Bay View, and Riverwest to Wauwatosa, West Allis, Glendale, and Oak Creek. Whether your car is parked in Walker’s Point, near the Medical College in Wauwatosa, or out in Menomonee Falls or Cudahy, you can donate it without leaving home. Non-running vehicles are welcome, there’s no inspection or repairs required, and pickup is available Monday through Saturday throughout the holiday season. Donate now, beat the December 31 deadline, and support life-changing services for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind (EIN 58-2164446).

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start your 2-minute Milwaukee donation form or call

2 minutes

Share your basic vehicle and contact info online or by phone. It really does take about two minutes. Tell us you want your donation to count for this tax year so we can prioritize a pickup date before December 31 in the Milwaukee Metro.

2

Choose a pickup day before December 31

5 minutes

Our team, working with Heritage for the Blind, will look at Milwaukee tow routes and offer you the earliest available time. To be safe, schedule 3–5 business days before Dec 31 so we can guarantee a pickup slot within the tax year.

3

Confirm keys, title, and access for the tow truck

5–10 minutes

Gather your title if available and make sure the vehicle is accessible in your driveway, garage entrance, or street parking in Milwaukee or nearby suburbs. Non-running and untitled situations may still be workable—just explain when you schedule.

4

Vehicle is picked up — your deduction year is locked in

15–30 minutes on pickup day

On pickup day, the tow driver meets you at your Milwaukee-area location, completes a quick handoff, and removes the vehicle at no cost. The exact pickup date (on or before Dec 31) is the year the IRS will treat your car as donated.

5

Receive your tax acknowledgment and Form 1098-C (if needed)

Within weeks after sale

After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails your written acknowledgment, and for vehicles sold over $500, IRS Form 1098-C. Even if this arrives the following year, your deduction belongs to the year the car was picked up.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Pickup date = donation year

For IRS purposes, your vehicle donation is made on the day the charity takes possession. If your car is picked up on or before December 31 in Milwaukee, the deduction applies to that tax year—no matter when the car later sells.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

If Heritage for the Blind sells your donated vehicle for more than $500, they issue IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the gross sale price, which usually sets your maximum deductible amount when you itemize on your tax return.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To claim a tax deduction for your Cream City Keys car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you take the standard deduction, you usually cannot also claim this charitable deduction.

Written acknowledgment for your records

You’ll receive a written acknowledgment from Heritage for the Blind after your vehicle sells. Keep this with your tax files. For donations over $500, the IRS expects you to have this documentation to substantiate your claimed deduction.

Receipt can arrive next year, deduction stays this year

Even if your 1098-C or acknowledgment arrives in the following calendar year, your deduction year is based on when the car was picked up. A Dec 31 pickup in Milwaukee still counts for that tax year’s return.

FAQ

Does scheduling before December 31 count, or does the car have to be picked up?
The IRS goes by the date the charity actually takes possession of your car. That means your vehicle must be physically picked up on or before December 31 to count for this tax year. Just calling or completing the form isn’t enough—schedule early so we can tow it before year-end in the Milwaukee Metro.
How far before December 31 should I schedule my Milwaukee pickup?
Plan on scheduling 3–5 business days before December 31 to be safe, especially in Milwaukee’s winter weather and holiday traffic. Heritage for the Blind operates Monday–Saturday during the holiday season, but last-minute slots can fill quickly. The sooner you contact Cream City Keys, the easier it is to guarantee a pickup within this tax year.
My car doesn’t run. Can I still donate it before year-end?
Yes. Non-running and damaged vehicles are welcome. There’s no inspection or repairs needed. As long as our tow partner can safely access your car in Milwaukee or surrounding suburbs, we’ll pick it up free. Just be sure we can reach it and schedule soon enough for a pickup on or before December 31 if you want this year’s deduction.
What tax paperwork will I receive, and when?
After your donated vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment; for vehicles sold over $500, this includes IRS Form 1098-C. This may arrive weeks or even a couple of months after pickup, sometimes in the next calendar year. The deduction still belongs to the year the vehicle was picked up, not when paperwork arrives.
How much can I deduct for my Milwaukee car donation?
For most vehicle donations over $500, your deduction is generally limited to the amount Heritage for the Blind receives from the sale. This amount will be shown on Form 1098-C. There are some exceptions (like when the charity significantly uses or improves the vehicle). Always confirm your specific deduction with a tax professional.
Do I need my title, and what if I can’t find it before Dec 31?
Having your title makes the process smoother, but in some Wisconsin cases, arrangements can be made if the title is lost. Still call or complete the 2-minute form now so we can discuss options. The key for your tax year is getting the vehicle picked up by December 31 in Milwaukee, not when replacement paperwork is finalized.
Is free pickup available everywhere in the Milwaukee Metro?
Yes. Pickup is free throughout the Milwaukee Metro and beyond—whether you’re in the city, Wauwatosa, Glendale, Shorewood, Greenfield, Oak Creek, or nearby suburbs. There’s no towing cost to you, and no hidden fees. Just schedule early enough so we can secure a pre–Dec 31 pickup time if you’re aiming for this year’s tax deduction.
