Cancel your insurance only after the vehicle has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. Do not cancel early. If the car is still yours, an uninsured loss could land on you, and some states penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered.
Before you call, handle plates or registration first if your state requires that step. Then remove the vehicle or cancel the policy and ask for any prorated refund.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Do this first, even if pickup just happened. Check that the vehicle is no longer in your possession, the keys were turned over, and the title was handed off as instructed. Save the pickup receipt or donation paperwork. Do not cancel coverage while the car is still waiting in your driveway, parking space, or repair lot.
Handle plates or registration
In the Milwaukee Metro, registration questions still run through state rules. Some states require you to surrender plates, cancel registration, file a sale or donation notice, or otherwise update registration before insurance ends. Other states do not. If you are unsure, check with the Wisconsin DMV before canceling insurance. If a DMV step is required, finish it first and save proof.
Call with the donation date
Call your insurer after pickup, title hand-off, and any required registration step are complete. Give the donation date as the pickup and title-transfer date. Ask the representative to make that date the insurance change date. Do not choose an earlier date just to save premium, because the vehicle may still have been your legal responsibility then.
Remove or cancel coverage
If you have a multi-car policy, ask to remove only the donated vehicle from the policy. Keep the rest of the policy active for the vehicles you still own. If this was the only vehicle on the policy, cancel the policy. If this was your only car, avoid creating a gap in coverage if you still need insurance for another vehicle soon.
Request a prorated refund
Ask whether any prepaid premium will be returned. Many insurers prorate unused premium when a vehicle is removed or a policy is canceled, but the amount, timing, and payment method depend on your policy. Confirm whether the refund goes back to your card, checking account, escrowed loan account, or by mailed check.
Keep written confirmation
Before ending the call, ask for written confirmation by email, mail, or your online account. It should show the vehicle, policy number, effective date, and whether the policy was changed or canceled. Save it with your title copy, pickup receipt, donation paperwork, plate or registration proof, and any refund note.
Why the order matters
Insurance should stay active until the donor’s ownership and possession have actually ended. Pickup without title hand-off can leave questions. Title hand-off without pickup can also leave questions if the car is still on your property. The cleanest file shows the same date for pickup, title transfer, and insurance removal whenever that is accurate. If those dates differ, tell the insurer the facts and ask for written confirmation of the effective date they use.
Common questions
Can I cancel if pickup is scheduled for tomorrow?
No. Wait until the vehicle has actually been picked up and the title has been handed off. A scheduled pickup is not the same as a completed donation. If anything happens before pickup, you do not want the vehicle sitting uninsured while you may still be responsible for it.
What if my policy covers more than one car?
Do not cancel the whole policy unless you mean to end coverage for every vehicle on it. Ask the insurer to remove the donated vehicle only. Then confirm the remaining vehicles, drivers, and coverage levels are still listed correctly before you hang up.
Will my insurance refund be automatic?
It might be, but ask directly. If you prepaid premium beyond the effective removal or cancellation date, request any prorated refund. Ask how much it is, how it will be paid, and when to expect it. Keep the written confirmation with your donation records.
More donation prep guides
After the car is picked up, title hand-off is complete, and any required plate or registration step is handled, you can end the vehicle’s insurance cleanly. Keep the insurer’s confirmation with your Cream City Keys donation records. Your donated vehicle supports Heritage for the Blind (EIN 58-2164446).
